Nuray Jemil, KAS Head of Media and Film Department, has been named 2017 Travel Photographer of the Year by the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW). The BGTW is a leading organization for travel media professionals. The competition was judged based on a portfolio of Nuray’s photographs that had recently featured in National Geographic Traveller and Rough Guides. The images accompanied articles on Chilean Tierra del Fuego, Argentine Patagonia, Panama’s cultural Fiestas Patrias and the flower industry of the Netherlands. Nuray’s current projects focus on Western Australia, Spain and the Arctic.
In addition to teaching at KAS, Nuray is a freelance photographer and travel writer. When she arrived at King Alfred School from living overseas in Chile, she had just won the 2010 Wanderlust magazine Photograph of the Year, having been a runner-up and a finalist in 2008 and 2009. It was a commission to photograph the Northern Territories in Australia which started her on the professional photography road. Since then she has been published in Conde Nast Traveller, Wanderlust and a number of inflight magazines. Nuray said “This is primarily why I became part-time, and moved from solely teaching English to running the Film and Media A-Level department, combining my teaching of literacy and text with the visual, including editing for film and photography.”
