GCSE students shine at The King Alfred School

22nd August 24

Year 11 students at The King Alfred School (KAS) could not contain their excitement today after achieving an impressive set of GCSE results.

Well over half (55.4%) of grades earned were 7/A and above, with 94.3% of grades at 4/C and above. The top end results put KAS well over double the national figures and significantly above the independent school average.

Robert Lobatto, Head of The King Alfred School, said: “It has been inspiring to see our students rising to the challenge of their GCSE years with great spirit, determination and talent.

“As a school that is committed to providing an excellent education for all students without undue pressure, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

“At KAS, we believe that exams should be reformed to better serve students and the wider community. We have started to implement these reforms ourselves, by introducing our own School Directed Courses (SDCs) and offering alternative subjects, such as KAS Literature.

“Notwithstanding this, it is fantastic to see what our young people have achieved within the current system, and this group should be rightly proud of their results.

With students achieving the top grade (9) in a full spread of subjects the strength of teaching and learning across departments is clear to see

Jimmy, who achieved an outstanding set of grades said: “I feel great! I’ve got a great set of results and am staying here to do my A levels. King Alfred is a great environment; it gives you the space to work the way you need to.”

Erin was chuffed with her results, which will also see her staying on at KAS. She said: “I am so thrilled! I improved a lot of my grades between mocks and the real exams, and I feel hugely positive about my results, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without the support of the teachers here. I’m staying on at KAS to History, Geography and Photography – I can’t wait.”

Tabby is excited to be joining the school’s unique, full-time UAL qualification after achieving an excellent set of GCSE results. She said: “I am overall very happy with my results and I’m staying on at KAS to take the UAL Production and Performing Arts course! I got a Distinction in the UAL Level 2 Drama course, and I can’t wait for Year 12 to start. I’ve been waiting three years to take the Sixth Form course. I love the school and how supportive they are whatever your goals are.”

Dylan has been at KAS since Reception and achieved a brilliant set of results: “The biggest reason I got the results I have is the amazing teachers we have here at KAS and the support they’ve given me – they look after each individual student. I have grown up at KAS and I feel like I’ve turned out well!”

New Director of Sixth Form, Eleanor Mitchell-Webb, said: “We’re delighted that the majority of Year 11 students will return to KAS in September to join the Sixth Form, where they will benefit from small class sizes and individualised learning.”
