It was a busy seven weeks of sport at KAS in the first half of Autumn Term, which brought wins, losses – and even an abandoned match! Read more below, and see a full list of results at the bottom of the page.
Our girls got the school year off to a smashing start, with the Year 6 team securing a 6-0 win over Alma (with the help of a few Year 5 fill-ins!). Taking place on home turf, a great turnout provided a fantastic atmosphere for the match. Despite being 3-0 up at half time, the girls didn’t take their foot off the pedal going into the second half, and the work rate and desire from every player was applaudable.
Just one week later (and in pouring rain) the same team went on to make the quarter finals of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) U11 Girls Football Festival Tournament, missing out on the semis by the narrowest of margins. The Year 8 girls celebrated success at the same tournament, with a winning performance to bring home the plate. Spirits were high on the KAS students’ return, despite being soaked to the bone!
Fresh from their tournament win, the Year 8 girls went on to enjoy a 9-3 victory over Trevor Roberts, with great team play, effort and relentless attacking. There was a brace of goals for Sierra, a hat-trick for Marine, and a fantastic four for Eden.
A strong crowd of staff, students and parents started the school year by cheering Year 6 on to a 4-1 win against Trevor Roberts in the glorious September sunshine. Marti very deservingly picked up the MVP award after scoring all four KAS goals, although every player gave their all. Special mention must go to Archie, whose impressive hard work saw him playing practically every position known on the pitch!
The team’s subsequent home game against Alma was unfortunately abandoned mid-match due to high winds making for unplayable conditions, and they went on to lose 1-5 away at Underhill Junior School.
It was a different story for the Year 5 boys against Trevor Roberts, who showed lots of character in their 6-0 loss. Hunter made some solid saves in the first half, Jude ran the show in midfield with his sharp changes of directions and close ball control, Lucas showed great speed and will to drive forward, and Kit persistently tracked back to good effect. Onwards and upwards!
Year 7 made a rip-roaring start to the season with a comfortable 13-0 win over North Bridge House Canonbury, with Rafi claiming four goals and the MVP award. With their confidence bolstered, the team went on to take second place in the plate competition at the ISA U12 Boys National Football Tournament – a good result after coming up against some very well-drilled teams, with the boys displaying great resilience and togetherness.
A similar spirit was on show as the Year 9s lost 4-8 against North Bridge House Canonbury. As a team, the boys held together well and showed some very promising signs, especially going forward. In spite of the result, the boys returned full of high spirits and praise for each other.
Year 8 also took plenty of positives from their 4-2 loss to North Bridge House Senior Hampstead, with the whole team showing great resilience and a desire to fight for possession, in both attacking and defensive play. Speed, agility and ball control when moving forward contributed to our two goals, with Shen at left wing and River at right win both converting their chances. The MVP award was shared between defenders Harry F and Remy, who played a pivotal role in limiting the opposition’s attack. A great team effort.
Elsewhere, Year 11 secured a 5-3 win away at The King’s School in Harpenden, whislt our First XI Sixth Formers dominated their two fixtures, with a 9-0 win over Hampstead Fine Arts College and a 5-2 victory against Highgate. A tough first half in the latter saw the scoreline all square going into the break, but some incredible individual performances backed up by strong teamwork and discipline helped Tom bag himself a hat-trick and MVP of the game.
The Year 8 girls had a storming start to the season, with a comfortable 12-7 win for the A team and a whopping 21-0 win for the B team, both away to Christ’s College Finchley. The A’s defence worked really hard as a unit, forcing lots of turnovers and interceptions. Great build-up play through the court was rewarded by consistent shooting in the D. Overall there were some fantastic performances, notably Marney who picked up the MVP award. Meanwhile, the Bs demonstrated outstanding teamwork, communication and cohesion. Special mentions go to Summer’s dominant shooting and to Clara, who scored MVP for her performance.
It proved a tougher start to the season for the Year 9s, with losses against South Hampstead High School in both friendly (8-18_ and league (8-11) matches. Despite this, the teams showed excellent resilience to keep fighting and trying, with noticeable improvement throughout one game resulting in KAS winning the final quarter while keeping a clean sheet. Special mention goes to Sierra who picked up the Player of the MVP award, being a real driving factor in the team.
Another unfortunate loss came at the hands of Christ’s College Finchley, which finished 8-14. However, the encouraging passages of smooth, precise play evident in that match helped the team secure a nail-biting 11-10 victory over Hendon School just 12 days later – a testament to their resilience and fighting spirit.
Our Year 10s also enjoyed a win against Hendon that same day, securing a comfortable 22-2 victory.
Finally, the Year 11s put in a great shift at the ISA Regional Netball Tournament, winning three of their five matches. Fantastic teamwork coupled with resilience to pressure made for a very enjoyable day of netball, with the girls proving humble in victory and showing great attitude in defeat.
In Lower School, our mixed Year 4 dodgeball team enjoyed success this term with a convincing 5-1 win.
Meanwhile, Years 4-6 participated in the Barnet Schools Cross Country on Tuesday 8 October. It was a cold, wet morning, but that didn’t stop everyone giving it their all with no complaints – just big smiles and cheerful support. Many admirable performances saw KAS place 15th out of 37 schools; an impressive feat!
And finally, a group of Year 10s competed in the National Schools Ski Championship at The Snow Centre in Hemel, where they were filmed as part of their GCSE grading. PE teacher Henri said: “It was a really successful day out and a fantastic way to get a grade for a unique sport. Well done to those who went along and participated!”
