KAS students with a passion for classical civilisations took a deep dive into Ancient Rome last term as part of our Upper School co-curricular programme.
Having selected Classics for their Friday afternoon ‘Choice’ activity, the students – Hugo C, Inigo W (both Year 8), Tate K and Georgiy V (both Year 9) – decided to create a visual timeline of the Roman Republic. No easy task in the space of a single term!
Their comprehensive project included translating a host of Latin words, researching Roman governance, and charting the various Kings of Rome, starting with the mythical figures of Romulus and Remus, legendary founders of the city.
Art also played a pivotal role in their final display, including drawings of the various types of Roman armour with details of how each was used, and a series of sketches depicting Hannibal’s crossing of the Alps.
Classics is just one of the options available to students for Friday afternoon’s ‘Choice’, one of our core co-curricular activities designed to inspire a love of learning beyond the curriculum. The wide menu of activities ranges from blacksmithing to bouldering, meditation to money matters, cooking to radio controlled cars.
“I chose Classics Choice because I’ve always been interested in ancient cities,” said Inigo. “A lot of the myths are well known, so it’s been interesting to learn the truth behind them.”
“I enjoyed learning about Ancient Rome in History, so doing this Choice has allowed me to go more in-depth and learn more,” added Hugo. “I really liked being able to decide which aspect of it we studied.”
For Tate, Classics Choice proved to be good prep for Classical Civilisations, a GCSE course she will begin next academic year. The two-year course explores Greek mythology, and touches on topics such as gender, politics, and morality. “Some people think Classics is boring, but once you study it you discover it’s actually good fun,” she said.
