2023 marked the 125th anniversary of The King Alfred School – a school founded to provide an excellent education focussing on the whole child while also making a positive impact on the world.
When King Alfred School opened in 1898 it had seven students, two staff members and was based in a ramshackle old house in Ellerdale Road. Little did the founders then know that 125 years later the roll would be 700, the staff over 150 and the School would stretch across two beautiful sites; Manor and Ivy Wood.
This milestone anniversary offered an opportunity for our community to reflect on past achievements and develop exciting new plans and projects. KAS 125 was all about ‘Honouring our Past; Inspiring our Future’.
Among the various activities in the pipeline was an event on 24 June 2023, which brought students, Old Alfredians, parents and past and present staff members together in celebration. There were attractions aplenty, with opportunities to take part in musical, sporting and artistic activities alongside some special moments and displays capturing our unique KAS spirit.
The event was sold out and was a fantastic day for all who attended. You can view the event programme here:
A special KAS 125 book was produced and is available to purchase. It’s a beautiful book which documents the experiences of past and present students and staff and create a rich tapestry of stories.
Our ‘125 Old Alfredian Voices’ project was created, a video record of stories from Old Alfredians going back to the 1930s. These conversations convey the affection and appreciation for KAS and show how the underlying philosophy is brought to life.
One project was handled brilliantly by the School’s very own archivist Sheila, who has begun lifting the lid on KAS over the last 125 years. Through Instagram and Twitter posts, Sheila is telling the history of ‘KAS in 125 Artefacts‘. Follow king_alfred_archive on Instagram and @KASArchives on Twitter to discover for yourself little-known stories about the School.
This wonderful film of KAS by British Pathé is a glimpse into the past and just one of the 125 Artefacts which celebrate our rich history:
